thank you.
It is so nice to be able to get to these resources online.
I lived in London for 12 years and got into Medieval Reenacting. We did 1450-1500. The night in shinning armor stuff. The group was very big on authenticity. If you wanted to sue something new, you had to provide 3 references for it. The group was good eough that we put on regular displays as part of WARICK Castle. It was neat sleeping inside he castle grounds after everyone had left. It was always fun talking to the tourists, with my american accent. Even after 12 years I could not sound English if I tried. I cannot get out an authentic sounding "cheers". For some reason with my American accent is simply sounds wrong.
Since I lived in in London I was able to go down to the London Museums and they had open research areas. You could go through some tremendous archives going back to the 14 and 1500s. I was able to find 2 wood cuts of merchants with glasses, as well as a catalogue with pictures of glasses from the 1400s from a UK Ophthalmology publication that had a publication on the history of glasses. Based on the woodcuts, I was able to make myself a set of wire frames to hold my lenses. They were odd, in that they did not have any ear pieces and instead had a wire section that went up to the forehead. There were like the outline of a cross at the top. The bottom legs of the cross held the lenses. It took a while to figure out, but they simply slid under your hat and the headband kept them in place. At that time you wore a hat at all times when public. I had to present the woodcuts, articles to the group before I could wear the glasses in public. And a lot of the public asked about them. I kept copies of the woodcuts handy to show people who simply could not accept that glasses were used in the 1450's.
I miss being able to go and do the research in archives like that.
All of this to say.... Thanks. It is nice that you can now get to something like this online.
Information about Dzi or Chung zi Agate bead? (sorry if i'm wrong) no wonder i'm doing it too, a nine eye dzi agate is offered around 1.5 million us$ in China, it is tempting though! here in Pakistan these sort of ancient agate stones does pop up in market once in a blue moon, by excavating privately, or by any heirlooms, I am in specific antique business as well , but not expert in beads, i would be glad if i find some ancient bead specialist here, or someone tells me about any ancient bead expert..
