Hello all! I've definitely made it a focus to learn antique/vintage Chinese jewelry and I am still in the process of doing so. I recently acquired this beautiful necklace but I'm not exactly sure what gemstones it has. This necklace is very large and weighs 12 ounces! The gems are faceted, and under light there are no bubbles. The carved figured is wood, but I'm not sure what the gemstones are! Agate, quartz, jade? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

The white beads do strongly resemble agate from the photos, though there are glass beads made to imitate it which might look reasonably like agate in this kind of photo. I suspect the other beads are what is sometimes called "chinese amazonite", which is actually a dyed chalcedony (in this case crackled and dyed). The agates look kind of nice but I wouldn't think the piece has much value at all. What makes you think it is antique or vintage?

Very interesting, thanks for the info! I've never heard the term "Chinese amazonite" and was really wondering what the green stones were! I wasn't sure how much value it had, but I bought it for twenty bucks, so can't really go wrong there. I actually don't think it's antique anymore, the silk string just looks too new. I think the carving on the side made me think of netsuke, and hoped it may be old at first, but I don't think it is. I am pretty surprised at how big it is tho! Have you ever seen anything similar? I really appreciate your response!

I don't think you overpaid. Most stringers would charge more than $20 just to string the beads on silk with knots.
I agree with scarodactyl about the agate, the bluish faceted beads could indeed be dyed quartz or dyed marble.
I bought some beads at a gem show several years back sold to me as blue hemimorhite.
Long story short, dyed blue marble.

Here is a report we did some time back on Chinese "Amazonite" aka dyed quartz.

Wow, dyed marble...interesting. Great report, thank you very much. I guess I don't feel like such an idiot for being confused by the very light green color! As you can see I am new to this site, but I think I found a new home...I can't believe I didn't find this place sooner! So much information for me to read up on. Thanks guys for the help!

Our pleasure. If we can help we are glad to. Often, when someone just posts a picture with no actual data, it is not possible to help.

I don't know exactly if the stone is agate or quartz. All I can see it is only a dyed marble. But anyway, this necklace is beautiful. :)
