A family member from Chicago purchased a ring in the 1890s it's been passed down through generations until my niece recently acquired it. Rumor has it first that it was Ruby then that it was synthetic. I will get to see it soon along with other jewelry that came with it. It's been described as a rectangular stone as long as your little finger tip is wide. Mounted on a silver colored ring.
What would I expect to find on a ring of this vintage as identifiers of sorts. Marks in the ring. Typical mounts, etc.

They did synthesize rubies right around this time. How early did they show up in the American marketplace? It's possible the ring may have been purchased as late as the 1920s

The first synthetic rubies were made in the late 1800s.
If the white metal is white gold, it is probable the ring was made after 1915,

Look at the style of the mounting and method of manufacture.
Jewelry is a fashion item, so a lot can be determined by style.

Well I definitely learned what synthetic Ruby looks like. The last couple of pages in the colored stones course on Ruby's covers synthetics. There is a photo of the arched brush marks on flame fusion Ruby. The stone in the ring was a perfect match right down to the little pin hole dots. My niece was surprised at how perfectly the picture and the stone matched. No question synthetic. Very interesting filigree setting the ring was more grey than silver maybe platinum. But still neat since it is a very early synthetic Ruby. The facets lined up well the girdle was rough and frosty and it was a marque cut 8x16x3.25 mm unfortunately she had to go quickly and I didn't get any pictures
