I have been a gemstone carver and lapidary artist since the early 2000s, I also love to explore and fossic for gems, I live in the Tamworth region of NSW Australia, on my property I recently found a deposit of obicular jasper in ironstone base, magnetic. Magnatite?. And may also have hematite, my property is on a section of the peel fault area some input here would be great about how it formed would be great.

definitely interesting stuff, given the green areas, any connection to bloodstone? it looks a lot less agatised/more iron rich.

Are you sure it is Chalcedony? It needs to be Chalcedony to apply the term Jasper to the stone.

Do us a favor. Go out to a piece of white concrete and rub the stone across it. Then tell us what color the line the stone leaves on the concrete is.

Thanks,

Steve

I'd think there'd need to be a decent amount of silica in there to dilute the hematite (and/or other iron oxides/hydroxides but probably hematite) enough to get that particular orange color. Hard to say without putting it under the microscope. Defining jasper rigorously is not an easy task in general (even 'chalcedony' is used to mean different things in different contexts after all).

Thanks for the help in identifying my stone, The orange obicular stone has a hardness of around 7, there is heaps of quartz - chalcedony in the mix, I also found bloodstone attached to this. I will have it tested by a geologist, another picture of the bloodstone, not muck green in the mix. I will do the streak test on a white brick on the black backing stone.

Thanks for the reply. Ok so I done a streak test on the black backing stone, streak is black and it’s magnetic, magnetite ?, and I scratch tested it, 6 to 6.5, approx. But does seem to have a silica mix in the black, the orange obicular material scratches the streak plate, left no colour on the plate so it’s silica- chalcedony quartz.

Well for sure that is not a typical Hematite streak color.

:P Gorgeous material, Mick! I need to camp out in your back yard. O:)

Finally have a cabber again and should be sourcing water supply today..any chance of buying a few yummy slabs from you in a couple of weeks?
Just want to break the wheels in first and get back into the 'zone' before touching the good stuff.... which I would be so tempted to do if here now.
Shoot me a pm either way, yay or nay, here or on ALF.
