Historic Russian emerald mine reopens

21/11/2006

The Malyshev emerald mine was officially reopened by Tsar Emeralds Corporation on October 9, 2006, with funding from the privately financed company based in Vancouver, Canada. It is the first time that ore would be produced from the mine's underground in more than 10 years.

"We decided three years ago to take on this rehabilitation project and re-shaft the mine," said Jimmie Wilde, Tsar Emeralds' senior vice-president of operations, at the mine's reopening ceremony, witnessed by the firm's senior management, government officials and hundreds of workers. "And now, operations at the (underground) mine have actually started." Mr Wilde further explained that they will be rehabilitating the mine's southern shaft and the capital shaft, and are looking into putting up a new processing plant next year along with cutting facilities. Reintroducing cutting and polishing at Malyshev is also included in the company's long-term plans.

Along with the ongoing rehabilitation of the mine, Tsar Emeralds is also actively attempting to increase the size of the Malyshev settlement, a move that Mr Wilde said is already in progress.

First Deputy to the Minister, Nikolai Tikhonov, also expressed the government's gratitude to investors and shareholders. He congratulated Tsar Emeralds for their "brave actions" in returning the mine to operation, and for a job well done on the rehabilitation of the complex and of the mine. "The reopening of this mine will mean more employment for the people of the Malyshev settlement and increased revenue for the local budget," he said.

Tsar Emeralds, which expects to go public in the coming year, estimated a production rate for the Malyshev mine of 204,000 tonnes per annum for 15 years.

Just thought it may be of interest

AGTA has a recent report, and there must have been others. Here's the link:

Unless memory fails me badly, these emeralds have been available for years now.

Bre-X was a nasty business. That said, was DiaMet not listed on the VSE at one point?
