Ok, did no looking or digging. But I have found a good camping spot as a home base for searching the granite hills of the area. "Clarkey's Petrol Head Paradise" is a park for dirt bike and off-road vehicle enthusiasts. Set on an old 3000-acre cattle run, you pay a small donation for the right to camp there and rip up the hills with trail bikes and the like. I'm not into that but my brother takes his family there pretty regularly. We can all camp together there for a few days while brother, niece and nephew go trail biking, wife reads books and I go prospecting. Just get together again in the evening for dinner and drinks.
It wasn't nearly as noisy as I was expecting, despite the vehicles running everywhere. They are spread out over 3000 acres so they aren't all that loud. This will make a good camp site, where my brother was set up today...
Looking north from the camp, the volcanic dome of Mount Colosseum rises in the background. That place gets me excited but since it's in a national park, no digging is allowed there. Heaps of other places in the area though.
The owner has put toilets and showers in - they don't really smell that bad
Yes, this spot will make a good home base for a few days fossicking.

Going to go for a bit of a scratch at the usual spot. Three bloody inches of rain last night, we'll see if the ground is workable. It's deep, decomposed granite sand so it's not like puggy clay. It's also been pretty parched for months so hopefully the ground has soaked up the rain like a sponge and not made it down to the crystal layer, about three feet below the surface. If we can't dig, we'll have to find something else to do.
