Post subject:  adapting a gold high sluice for other minerals

This may have been asked before, I will try searching again later.

I have a "gold hog" and gas pump that does a good job on gold.

I have several "gold hog: matts.

I am hoping to make a early (or late) fall trip from Alaska to Dallas

Are there any quick mods or mats that I could pick up that would help me do gems?

I do not want to remake a new jig, but if there are some mods that micht work for sapphire or garnets.... or whatever else is between Alaska and dallas..... I would be willing to try it.

Not too sure Ted - I guess the matting would need to be coarser to pick up facetable-sized heavy stones?

I made modifictions to a sluice box by simply cutting 1/4 inch mesh hardware cloth and making riffles by folding it....the garnets it stopped were mostly smaller then the 1/4 mesh so perhaps some 3/8ths or 1/2" first half then quarter in the second half might have been better

I've always just reduced the pitch of the sluice. It's a specific gravity difference. If sapphires are 3.5 ish you end up with a lot more concentrates. The good news is sapphires come in a volcanic ash deposit. So you won't get as much as you'd think.
Garnets as you know are heavier. So if that's your target increase the pitch not to the amount you'd run for gold but close. Again that will cut down on the concentrates. I never change my screen size. I do classify more closely to the size Im looking for. Eliminates the fines that clog up the box.
