My mother found a piece of quartz in her yard and we are wondering if it could have formed naturally down there or was more likely put there at some point. When she moved in to her house the yard was all cement. and She found it after she removed the cement and started planting things. Don't worry we aren't planning to dig up the yard or anything, lol. I'm just curious how common this type of find is in a back yard. My mother really loves quartz crystal since she found it in her own back yard.
Thanks!
P.S. We live in San Francisco.
Just be careful and don't post that it's crystal clear purple with red flash...we'll decend on your mom's place like locusts!
But to answer your question, quartz is very common. Here it is my state's gemstone (the brown smokey variety). Orange is citrine, purple is amethyst. If it IS clear, that's very cool! also keep an eye out for "terminated" where it it is long and narrowish, but naturally formed to a point at one end.

did I hear "clear purple with red flash" oh... okay... I thought somebody had found some ammy's I was fixin' to head on over It's really not to common to find a nice quartz crystal in your backyard(trust me I have tried) but I have found them a mile from my house. So the chances of you finding a nice crystal at your house is slim the chances of finding some in your area(if they are found in that type of terrain) are pretty good. I think finding any deposit of stone[gemstone] has to be 50% research and knowledge and 50% luck(maybe more luck than research or knowledge)

I wish it was purple with red flashes. This one is just clear. Since it's somewhat of an unusual find that makes it a kinda special
Thank you both for answering!
