This is an aquamarine beryl crystal that Rodney and I dug out at the Hogg Mine last year. the same place as Gingerkids post. Kaolin(the matrix) is decomposed pegmatite. it took probably like 100 million+ years to make solid rock into this powdery stuff. Fine China/porcelin is made out of this white stuff(kaolin). usually the crystals we dig up fall out of the kaolin because it is so powdery but I was able to salvage this piece while still covered with it. i slowly picked the kaolin out from around the beryl crystal and used a mixture of 50% water and 50% elmers glue and a spray bottle to secure the beryl crystal and keep the kaolin from disintegrating. Might have posted this before but it's pretty cool because it's the only spec. from there that I have like this. if it wasn't for the glue this sucker would fall right apart..see how fractured it is

i agree, empress, it reminds me of a spine.

thanks for sharing, jason!!

i learn something new on the forum every day, i learned in the early morning hours of july 4th where porcelain or fine china comes from! kaolin! and this specimen comes from the hogg mine in trapp county-had to throw in the trapp county-not troup county!

->by the way, amguy, i am curious to know how/where you have all these specimens stored/displayed? cball had listed on the forum some nice cabinets for sell for a very reasonable price; which came with the closed jewelry store he purchased. not sure if he sold them or not.

i added a website which lists common marketing names of gems in one of the posts you started on the forum for you, not sure if you saw it<-
