Can't you simply mail them the item?

Well depending on the value of the stone you have a few options, either a fedex or similar courier package fully insured, or simple (signed for) registered mail for less valuable stones. Standard mail is really a no go as you must have a signature from the recipient to be sure nobody claims to have not received a package when really they have, and you are not covered at all for any loss.

Just ensure you clearly state the contents of the package to smooth customs process, this is usually a little sticker you get in post office you can scribble description and value of item on for registered mail, or for fedex all that info will be requested before they send your package.

I find if you use a little poetic license when describing your gems, you are less likely to have trouble with postal theft. For example if mailing a Sapphire, describe it as Corundum rather than Sapphire, this is a much less appealing name for them nasty thiefses! Of course some countries are dodgier than others on this front, so keep that in mind.

Last I knew FedEx doesn't insure jewelry or gemstones. Make sure to check that with whatever courier you choose.
