I had heard a rumor somewhere of true pink topaz from Mexico, but I had thought it was just a misrepresentation of pale sherry and/or rutile-included stones. Until now I had never seen any obviously chromium-bearing topaz from a rhyolitic source. Today that has changed thanks to this listing on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Topaz-Imperial- ... 4ad52449a2
So... that's neat. That suggests that there might also be red-orange Imperial topaz. I have an orange imperial stone which is labelled as being Mexican, but I didn't believe it. Now I wonder...
It is of course impossible to tell for sure from the photo, though it does appear to extend into the matrix at the base. The crystal form does also seem to have a very rhyolitic look--it's pretty unusual for the metamorphic topazes to have such crisp crystal form, especially with the center line of the prism so perfectly centered. Unfortunately I don't have an extra 65 dollars floating around to investigate it. You are of course right that I shouldn't speak so conclusively based on two photos like this though.
