Just a note: This post isn't meant to be a reflection of my opinion of David or Multicolour. They're fantastic and I would recommend them to anyone.

I was shocked, I'm always pleased with my purchases from David, but this one blew me away. It's not an expensive stone, so I wouldn't make a fuss over it, but I can't stop shaking my head.

I ordered a variety of stones for a pendant I'm putting together for a friends mom, and one of them was a 3mm round aqua. The crown is so flat, it's nearly non-existent, I actually thought it was completely flat above the girdle until I looked at it under magnification, and the girdle is at least 10 times as thick as the the crown is deep. What am I supposed to do with that? The girdle is so thick it doesn't even fit into the notch on the prong?

Telling us about it is probably more of a fuss for him than telling him about it. It's a cheap stone, he probably has a million of them which were cut overseas, and that one didn't get caught before it went out. If I were him I would just mail you another one (after making sure it wasn't another bad one of course).

I wasn't complaining about him, exactly, I was just amazed to see something so poorly cut. You're right though, he probably has a ton of them in stock and it wouldn't make much sense to examine every single one.

David does not pack most of orders himself. This is a job being done by his stuff. All of them are good professionals, but who does not do any mistake? Stones like this small aqua are being cut and ordered in quantities of hundreds and thousands.. Most of crap is being picked up and thrown out, but...

I don't think this little trouble may be a reason of any conclusion about David's reputation.

I had a similar experience last year, from an Aussi dealer in Thailand.
I had a customer ask for 2 small, yellow sapphires in pear shape.
Each was to be around 0.50ct, and for me, a waste of time to cut pears this small.
So, I ordered some, specifying they were going to U.S client, to give the hint they needed to be good!!
Well, my,my, one had a chip out of the side, right thru the girdle, and taking out a girdle facet.
I had to dop it, and spend an hour getting a result worth anything.
When I mentioned this in an email, the reply was, "gee, don't look too closely at those stones, they are native cut you know".
What p--ed me off even more, was I never heard back from the customer.
Last time I'm doing this, from now on, only stones I cut leave my bench!!

I think a word to him would be a service. Someone dropped the ball with the quality control. I'd want to know if I was him. :)

Haha, I did contact him and sent him a picture, he immediately apologized and sent out a new one. As Scaro said, he basically told me it's not feasible for him to check every accent stone that goes out, and that's understandable. He's great to deal with. As I said, this post wasn't meant to be a dig at him, I was just amazed that this stone even exists. If I had cut it I would make sure it never saw the light of day LOL. David's reputation is well earned and this hasn't changed my opinion of them at all.

It might merit a crosspost to the lapiderpy thread.

I've never been disappointed with anything from Multicolor. I accept that sometimes you get what you pay for. But this doesn't seem to be right. Getting back to them would be best.

If ever I have a problem with a supplier, I go to them first to rectify or comment on it.

If it's a stone that warrants comment because of a particular feature, I'll take a picture and comment on it, BUT I would leave the suppliers name off. If they were a repeat offender, unhelpful, didn't care or some other type of (insert your own expletive) I would name and shame.

Just a view from the sidelines.

Yeah, I did get back to them on it and they fixed it up for me. I'm not shaming anyone, Multicolour is a great business and they will continue to get mine. Sometimes things get missed :) This post was anecdotal and I don't think it would or should harm his reputation at all.

As long as there are no hard feelings, it's all good. Glad they've sorted it for you.

Take care.
