Does anyone have a source for genuine amber jewelry? I have a client who wants a pendant with a fairly large piece of amber with a prominent insect inclusion.
Well, it happens I've just returned from my holiday in Slovakia. We hopped across the border into Poland a few times, and I was amazed at the amount of amber being sold there. Especially in tourist shops, like this one in the cloth hall of Kraków. Almost all I saw was heated & pressed 'sun spangles' amber, but "where there's smoke, there's fire". I cannot give any exact names unfortunately, but most likely there are people there who can help you out.

When I was at the Philadelphia Gem & Jewelry show last Sept. there was an exhibitor with a large display of Baltic amber . . . dark, light, large, small, buggy, un-buggy, you pick it. Reasonable too. I'll see if I can find the show info and get a name for you.

The company at the Philly G&J show is called Amber Design, based in Poland. A Google search did not find them, but alot of companies dealing in amber did hit. Based on what you're after you may want to pick it up from there.

I'm not sure what it is - but it's interesting looking!
I could be mistaken, but if my memory holds true, in order to get the "scale" looking objects in natural amber it has to be heated because they are actually the result of trapped moisture expanding and causing damage to the surrounding amber as they do so. There are also certain plants that had similar looking parts that are often seen in amber. And then there are the actual fish scales and such tossed in when they reconstitute or press amber. Hard to say without a much higher magnification of the inclusions.
I have plenty of amber here that I could cut and polish(with insects), but sadly, none, except for a few pieces of Copal, are of any large/substantial size, sorry.

I agree with Swishman
It looks to have sun spangles, which are pruduced by heat treading.
Jason I have quite a few peices of Mexican amber with quite large Termites in

Thanks folks but unless you have something extra inexpensive I dont think this customer is going to want it. I offered her some really nice ones i found in the $200.00 range and that was more than she wanted to spend.

I've found, over the years, that sometime when a customer requests something (especially a cheap something) the best answer is,"Sorry, I can't help you with that."

I'll bet it is just that their taste exceeded their knowledge of the cost. A good friend's son learned that same lesson recently. It's too bad really, at eleven, bugs and rocks are almost a perfect combination.
