Hello!

I am a distance education student nearing completion of the course. Due to COVID, GIA Carlsbad will not be reopening their student workroom for the remainder of the year. I have heard of unofficial student workrooms that have equipment and instructors on hand. Does anyone know of workrooms like this in the San Diego area where ai could possibly practice or schedule my exam?

I have a very complete lab here in La Jolla with much more equipment that there is available in the GIA student lab. I wouldn't call it a teaching lab, it is a working lab.

However, it is probably best to restrict yourself to what they will have available during your final.

How far along are you in the Gem ID course?

Have you done the Gem ID Lab class yet.

Are they sending out the 500 stone challenge stones during the crisis?

I have finished the entire suite of courses for the GG. I am enrolled in Gem 240 and on stone set 34/36. I have two sets to go to finish this course, and then my last step is the 20 stone exam.

I am completing my GG through distance education due to the fact that I am a working professional in the jewelry industry. So no worries about a novice student running amok in your lab or anything like that :)

They are shipping out stones now. For a few months at the beginning of all this they were not. I believe that as of October 5 full-time students are allowed to continue classes on campus, but the campus is still closed to distance education students, lab clients and the general public.

I am definitely interested to hear more about your lab! Is it possible to rent space there to work? Is it staffed by GG's who might be able to answer questions or provide support if needed (no big deal if not)? Is there someone there possibly able and willing to proctor an exam, or would you be open to a third-party proctor observing me taking the exam there?

I truly appreciate you! Thank you for your kind response to my inquiries!
