Hello Everyone,
My name is Lindsey & I am going to be starting the GG course at GIA this spring 2012. I am pretty stuck when it comes to finding an affordable/reasonable place to live in Carlsbad, along with potentially finding a roomate that is going to be attending the GIA as well. Any tips are greatly appreciated! I am indecisive when it comes to where to live, if I should search for a roomate or if I should look for a home that accepts GIA students to rent out a room. What are your thoughts? I am hoping to find a roommate, if not advice on nice places to live for the 6 month course would be helpful too. If anyone has advice to offer or tips, I would be happy to take in all input. Also study tips are welcome, any great books or websites to browse.

Hello Lindsey!
I'm starting the GG course this spring at GIA, Carlsbad, too! More precisely - from April to October! And I'm also looking for a potential roommate and a place to stay for those 6 months! If you want we can exchange e-mail addresses? I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

If you have any additional questions, feel free to send me a pm. I not only live in the area, I currently work at GIA, so I'm pretty familiar with the place

Paul, I am sooooo envious! I would love to work at the Carlsbad GIA! Beautiful campus, wonderful weather, close to my family. Although, also a very high cost area .

Lol, I am enjoying it quite a bit so far (my first week). I have lived my entire life in San Diego, San Francisco and Western Europe, so the cost does not seem that high to me
Sorry to get off topic... to the OP, please feel free to ask if you have any questions and I would be happy to answer with my opinions.

I hope things work out for you Lindsey. I am thinking of attending for the bench jeweler program sometime this year if I can get enough grants or a scholarship because it's a little pricey. I used to work as a bench jeweler for Mignon Faget for 5 years and loved it but got laid off. I then went into the New Orleans Fire dept for 10 years and recently hurt my back so it looks like I might be getting back into my passion as a career. I just hope the economy hasn't destroyed the trade to where you can't make a living on it anymore. Im actually in the process of deciding which school I will attend. GIA, Revere Academy, Etc. I wish there was something closer cause its gonna be hard going too far too long with kids lol

Thank you! Is it hard for a laymen to get into the topic. I heard about two week- courses to get a basic knowledge for diamond grading. That's what is interesting for me and my husband.

Hello,
I just finished up the distance education courses for my Gemologist Diploma! Now I have the three lab classes to take to get my GG. The courses are not hard to understand for the layperson at all. They are very clearly written and provide a lot of good information that anyone with or without a gemological background can understand. Good luck and enjoy!

Personally if there was a campus right next door I would attend it. The slim benefits of attending Carlsbad pale in comparison to the thousands of dollars you will save by attending the India campus. There are a myriad of ways to network beyond simply attending Carlsbad.
