Hello. I plan on enrolling in the six month long GJ (Graduate Jeweler’s) program from September 18 until April 3 on the Carlsbad GIA campus. Is there anyone else out there who plans on studying at GIA and seeking a roommate? Any suggestions from alumni in finding an apartment and/or a roommate would also be greatly appreciated.
I have been at the Carlsbad campus to take lab classes for GG and Bench Jewelry, but I’m not very familiar with the area. I have requested more information from Student Services for recommendations in finding housing. I’m interested in finding a place that is safe, clean, relatively close to campus with reasonable rates.

Pretty much the closer you get to the beach in san diego county the more expensive it is gonna be...If you tell me how far is the most you are willing to commute to get to the campus I can point you in a better direction. If I were you i'd find someone with a granny flat on a property in a nicer neighbor hood.
Stay away from north Oceanside.Like anywhere in the world use your head....if their are bars on the windows of homes you just might be in an area that has high crime rates

Thanks for your response, stairman. I figured as much about the rates closest to the water being higher. Carlsbad itself appears to be on the pricier side. I'm not sure how far I would be willing to commute. I'm hoping that I will be able to drive my car out there from Chicago but I'm not sure if it will make it. It is an old vw with 130,000 miles already on it. I'm guessing that a reasonable distance may include Vista, San Marcos and Escondido. I'm guessing that Carlsbad, Oceanside and Encinitas may be more saturated and on the expensive side.
I've been looking for private studio/bedrooms being rented out in the area attached to residences. The rates are reasonable for the area, but I don't know if any of these are in "nicer" neighborhoods. If I gave you a street name and town would you be able to tell me if that area is kosher? Thanks!

Thanks! I did contact GIA Student Services and received an extended list of various options for apartments in the area, as well as transportation. I'm still exploring all possible options at this point. Thanks again.
