Looking into the GG course, at what point do you need the items on their list ? courses covering essentials or grading? The $2.5K price tag isnt bad but it would fit better later in my budget. Timing is everything :)

You can always call the GIA and ask them, but I wouldn't think you needed instruments before you started getting stones to identify.

Don't buy instruments from GIA. They are too expensive there. Buy it on ebay.

You will not need to have access to any equipment until you are preparing for the Gem Identification course (which is typically the last course taken in the GG program). All of the other distance course are simply completed online or in a lab class with equipment provided.

It is certainly not required that you purchase from GIA, however if you do, note that you would be eligible for the student discount which is currently around 12% IIRC. The only piece of equipment that has specific requirements that are not common would be the refractometer as you need a model that has a removable magnification lens to take spot readings and the ability to use both white light and monochromatic lighting.

If you have additional questions, you can simply call and either Admissions or an instructor should be able to help.

Or, check with Brabra to get other options.

I don't recommend eBay for a new buyer.
Until one gets familiar with exactly what an instrument should do when working properly, they will nevr recognize when their used instrument is unreliable.

Admissions gave me the same answer Paul thank you! So away we go! Sally will make sure I didn't miss anything I am supposed to have lined up for admissions, organize some cash flow and I believe I'm in.

Hello Dan and Sally,

I finished the distance learning coursework and did not need the equipment until the Gem ID course. I did a combination of GIA instruments and others to complete the coursework. Good luck! I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Dave.
