Just a heads up to anyone who may have an interest in beginning an education in gemology. Please feel free to share and distribute to anyone you like, no prior enrollment at GIA required...

https://www.gia.edu/limited-time-offer- ... -no-charge

From the website:

As the effects of the coronavirus on our personal lives and businesses continue, GIA is committed to our mission to ensure the public trust in gems and jewelry through our educational offerings. To help support our corporate clients, trade associations, alumni and gem and jewelry professionals worldwide, we are waiving tuition ($750 total value) for all three online GIA Essentials eLearning courses with start dates between May 4 and June 29, 2020.

GIA Essentials eLearning courses cover fundamental knowledge for gem and jewelry professionals and are required for many GIA credentials. The courses are entirely online and allow you to work at your own pace within a three month maximum completion period for each course. No prior experience or gemological equipment is necessary to enroll in these courses.

Complete all three Essentials courses to earn the GIA Applied Jewelry Professional™ (AJP®) Diploma.

What a generous offer by GIA, Paul!!! Thanks for posting. I have passed it along to all of my students.

As a G.G. I have completed two of the three courses. If I sign up can I just take the remaining course to get the AJP credential?

Yes, I believe that you would be eligible Steve. As long as you have not previously enrolled in Jewelry Essentials before.

Thanks for the information! I think I'll give it a whirl and see what I can learn.

Thanks very much for the link!

Regrettably, it looks like it isn't working for California residents?

New classes begin every Monday morning, so you still have many opportunities to take advantage of this offering. The message for California residents is normal and applies to all initial eLearning enrollments at GIA. This is not related to the special on the Essentials courses.

The state of California has additional documentation requirements for first time enrollments which GIA is required to have on file, so you need to contact the admissions department directly so that they can provide assistance to collect the necessary documentation. Once you have the appropriate records on file, all future enrollments can be made online through self-service.

I hope that helps.

Yeah, fun and interesting, but no field trips, thin sections, cross sections, hours looking through a microscope sorting and counting fossil critters, dangerous acids, and all the other things that made us love our chosen major last time we were at school.

All too true. OTOH this is the first class I have taken in 35+ years. I found it amusing, especially the stuff on selling. I really wish the lady didn't say to hide all the price tags. I like to get an idea from looking at the price tags if I want to even stay in the store.

Hi Paul, is this offer likely to return? I am thinking of signing up for an e-learning course and was wondering if the kind offer from GIA might come back?

Hi David, I sent a response to your email this morning. For others who may be following this thread, I am not aware of any current plans to offer free eLearning courses in the near future.

However, we are currently within the scholarship application cycle and are accepting applications at this time. This is a wonderful option for students to receive funding for their gemological education and I would encourage anyone interested to submit an application. I wish that I had been aware of this option when I took my GG and GJ programs on campus 15+ years ago as I paid out of pocket
