I'm currently taking this. I just completed D&DG and am about to take the in-person lab. I'm traveling from Indiana to Carlsbad for the week and would like to be better prepared. I'll be studying pictures of inclusions until then.

I also read from people that Colored Stones is best taken in person. My student loans are currently in default, so paying out of pocket course-by-course for eLearning is my only option right now.

I was considering taking NAJA appraisal courses in the meantime. I spoke to them and was told that completing a GG wasn't necessary, but to still finish Colored Stones afterwards regardless.

Anyone with advice on what to expect or the best route to take?

Thanks,
-Jerry

Hi Jerry, you do not have enough posts to PM yet, however please feel free to contact me at pmattlin@gia.edu and I would be happy to point you in the right direction. Any of the instructors would be happy to discuss your questions and to provide guidance on your future route to take through the program.

There is no preparation needed prior to taking the lab classes :)

Jerry,

I don't think there is any problem in taking the Colored Stone Course through distance learning. I have mentored a number of students through the GG course. The course material, both written and digital, is excellent. It is backed up by very professional and engaged instructors. You will learn what you need to.

The labs are all stand alone and self contained. No prep other than the GIA prerequisites are need.

GIA has been turning out well prepared Gemologists globally for many decades. They are good at what they do. They produce a good product, which is you as a professional quality Gemologist.

being a Gemologist, and an appraiser are completely different things. It is of course best if your career goals are to be a top level gemstone and jewelry appraiser.
