hi,
I have been buying rough for a long time and its time for my son to take over. I have been wondering if there is any cad / 3d software that can help my son decide on how much yield can be expected from a rough or any other.

if anyone know a software please do recommend me one.

thanks in advance.

Robert Stirling author os GEMCAD is a cad\cam program that allows you to enter the demiinsions of rough to get all the possible cuts that can come from that rough. You must know about the internal characeristics of the gem species, grain, axis, etc. RI, and clarity. The program will create a model for the computer that can be rotated. Also you can see light leakage. We use this program to put in deminsions of jam peg colored stone designs, old cut diamonds, or stones we want to recut. I have found that old mine cuts with deep pavilions are better than rough, as rough often is treated with fillers, oils, and plastic. If the old miners cut is used as a preform, and a brighter smaller stone is cut, we often can sell it for more than the original stone. Great for appraisals too. winstone
