Hello,

I was shown an emerald cut diamond 5.8x3.9mm set in a ring with an elaborate gold backing of the culet.

The stone was well cut, but set in a way that a depth measurement is not possible.

That must be quite a common case.

My standard weight estimation app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... m.aigs.gwe
could not help me out.

Therefore I wonder how you handle such cases:
Is there an App/Software where one could enter width and length and which could estimate the standard depth of such a stone? - And maybe could our App/Software developers (I am thinking of @GTP Bill) add such a feature?

Is there a list that someone could supply, that has the standard millimeter sizes of Diamonds, which could help estimate the weight of the 5.8x3.9mm EC?

Do you have any other suggestion how to proceed?

Thanks a lot.

Could you describe it or post a screen shot?

Because I looked at
http://www.gemologytoolsonline.com

where there was a screenshot, and it did not seem to estimate depth, but rather needed depth to make a weight estimate.

When you put in the length and width, the depth is automatically generated.
If you have an actual depth you can overide the generated one by just erasing it and typing in the actual.

Ah, great thank you! :)

I hoped I could get this in an app, but maybe I need to buy the full GTP.

You can probably do a fairly good job of estimating the depth. Looking at the provided dimensions, my guess is that you are just over .50 cts in size. My experience is that emerald cuts are usually cut a bit deep, averaging approximately 0.66 percent depth to width. One can usually judge if this particular stone appears to be cut slightly shallow, or slightly deep by looking at the pavilion reflections. You could then adjust the 0.66 percent up or down within a range of a few percent. Use that value to estimate the depth, then enter that number in your weight calculations. You will get reasonably accurate results considering the limitations of the mounted stone you are describing.

Good luck,

Steve

Certainly, almost everything a software program does can be done on your own by sorting out the math.
The benefit of software is that it does it for you and saves oodles of time. :D
