I bought a cheap lot of mixed gemstones with the hope that some interesting inclusions would be included. What I got was mostly quartz gems with a sprinkling of peridot and pale blue topaz.
The garnets lived up to expectation wtih a vengence. I'm going to have a great deal of fun checking them out. Silk and crystals from top to bottom.
The mystery stone is an odd green stone; It has a tremendous fat girdle. Under the microscope there are striations, but they don't look like verneuil growth lines. SG: 2.54 RI: 1.530 I repeated this test several times and also got a couple of 1.520 The stone does not seem to have any fluorescence, nor does it wink under crossed polars. It show a faint pink colour through the chelsea filter but I could not see much in the spectroscope.

There was also an orange stone that looked very similar:

What is it? I'm thinking dyed chalcedony? I have no idea how to confirm this guess for a very inexpensive stone. I'm sure it's a common little filler stone for cheap lots, but I'd not run across it before. Any guesses?

Yup, that's your classic dyed agate. Likely started life as a common grey agate from Brazil. Sometimes sold as "green onyx" for the green or just as carnelian for the red (though the color is often wrong enough to immediately spot it as a fake vs a natural carnelian).
