Look at the zoning in the middle pic - am I wrong if I say it looks like a Kyanite fom Nepal?
What do you think?
Marlow I have quite a few Kyanites and I agree that stone looks like kyanite. The red flags i see are that the stone is being sold by a New Jersey coin dealer(don't trust people from Jersey) . The mini report is made to look like an AGL brief. Even the name AGI sounds like AGL. The 47th st. diamond district is full of scammers especially that building at 37 west 47th. I wish I could buy faceted cobalt spinels for 300 bucks but that ain't happening.
If you're going to buy that, why don't you pick up his natural Paraiba Tourmaline as well: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Natural-Paraiba ... SwBnVW9VBD After all, it clearly states replacement value is $5,000, so his $1500 asking price is a great bargain, no? I just love the "eye clean" and "neon green" statements! Just look at that ugly stone (or not!)! I'm amazed that this guy has 100% feedback! Merry Christmas, everyone!

As the RI of spinel and kyanite are close, and kyanite is not a widely known stone, who knows ? Maybe the "gemologist" who issued the report made a mess of it.
Sorry but it looks like one ( 1) quick measurement on a refractometer and thats it.
First - a spinel with such a fine color would be a kandidat for a valuable cobalt spinel - so you need to check the spectrum ( natural or synthetic).
Second - a spinel has never these vertical and horizontal stripes ( zoning). They are typical for kyanite like horsetail inclusions in russian or canadian demantoid.

No legitimate gem lab puts an appraisal on their report. That is a beautiful website, but the reality of the street level businesses on 47th street are- slimy hawkers steering bargain hunters to the booths of hundreds of creepy crooks selling diamonds and gemstones. Everything is misrepresented, laser drilled, or just plain phony. The real diamond and gem business on 47th st takes place in secure offices high up in the skyscrapers( far from the general public). That lab is putting on the report just what the seller wants hear. Good way to sell lots of reports, not real good for the buyer.
I heard there is a new patented treatment in Bangkok for blue spinel.....in makes a cobalt blue spinel that according my GIA gemologist friend screams unrealistic for a spinel. Anyone heard of this new blue spinel treatment?
