My grandfather was a gemologist and a member of the royal gemological society. He did lectures and talks and also had a slot on a tv programme talking about gems. He died around fifty years ago. I recently obtained a lot of his gem specimens (after my grandmother passed) and wondered whether they are of interest/value. I assume not but would like advice of what to do with them or who to ask? I have pics of all. There is zircon, sapphire, topaz, aquamarine and others. All are of a good size.

Thank you for your time

I think your best option would probably be to sell the collection to a dealer, assuming you don't want to take up gemology and gem selling yourself. You'll only get a fraction of the retail value but you also won't have to put the time and effort into identifying each one (assuming they aren't already all clearly marked), researching the market and selling them individually. On the other hand, if you want to take the time to sell them individually you'll at least want to spend some time researching different marketplaces and seeing what similar stones have sold for.

Royal Gemmological Society? You may want to contact them to see if they have any interest.
