Greetings, friends! I have received an egg made of a material resembling agate stone. I am not well-acquainted with gemstones so this is just me throwing my two cents in. It might just be marble or something else entirely. Can anybody help me determine the exact material and, in case it proves to be agate stone, determine exactly what kind of agate it is? I have attached a photo of the egg. Waiting for your reply. Thank you! Agata HB

I quickly googled your suggestion and apparently, geologists do indeed lick rocks. Hoping that you're not messing with me, here is my answer: it has no taste. It tastes like my porcelain mug. Or how I imagine marble would taste like.

In that case, onyx marble is the commercial name for calcite, but yes stairman, we are thinking of the same material. The "real" onyx is black chalcedony or banded black and white chalcedony, which of course doesn't apply here.

For the record we don't. I don't know what goober keeps putting that in 101 texts and such but taste is neither useful nor particularly safe as a diagnostic tool.
