How was it identified?
I didn't ask specifically. He just said all four gemologists studied it and came up with the same thing based on it being OTL, it's refraction and pleochroism. He said they definitely ruled out, tourmalene and chrysoberyl and zircon. It wasn't there for an ID, so he didn't write anything down. I think I'll still send it off to GIA for a firm ID which he offered to do.
I asked again and here's what he said: "Characteristic internal inclusions under magnification. And the fact that not many transparent yellow gemstones over the RI limit have the dispersion of this stone." He and 3 other gemologists are all 99.9 % sure.

I don't know why I didn't think to ask this sooner! I called the jeweler who converted to the stick pin to a pendant for me. I asked him if he paid any attention to the stone. He said as a matter of fact he did! He thought he had mentioned it to me, but he forgot! Anyway -- there are 4 gemologists at his jewelry store and they were all interested in it! They all came to the conclusion that it was Sphene!
I looked it up and it does seem to fit: OTL, doubly refractive, strong pleochroism, rutiles.
What say you?
Well that was my primary guess earlier. I was most concerned about the lack of dispersion in the pictures. But still my first guess so far.

The dispersion of the gem is really evident in hand. I didn't capture it well in my photos!
