Hi
First of all thanks for reading this post

Can anyone help in identifying this gemstone

i am new to gemology but very keen to learn

here is what ive got so far

Magnetism = No or my magnet is weak
Specific Gravity= 1.6
Pleochroism= None
chelsea filter reaction = looks red
UV = no reaction
RI ( using digital refractometer) =1.451 - 1.363 = -0.088



Any help would be much appreciated

Looks like opal, once again your SG numbers look odd to me. How are you calculating the SG values?

You asked us to identify your Opal. Ok it looks like it is an Opal.

I am thinking that you wanted different information than whether it is an Opal though.

It doesn't look like black Opal from Lightning Ridge Australia. It looks more like Ethiopian opal.

It also looks a lot like the smoke treated black opal from Ethiopia.

Of course that opinion is not worth all that much since we never get to examine and test it in person.

Any insight and information is good, I really would like to learn more, and know how to get get better at testing.

As I suggested in another thread, get some stones which have been positively identified (study stones) and check test results with your insturments.
