I'm looking for recommendations for a pneumatic graver for someone just starting out with metal engraving and jewelry making. I'm thinking a foot peddle system rather than palm activated would be better but don't know if that's true or not.

I've looked at Airtact and Gravermeister as well as the systems from Airgraver. (wow, pricey!)

Anyone with knowledge on this stuff and what would be good for a beginner? Engraving, settings, and hammering would probably be the most work done with the tool. Maybe some gun engraving down the road once I get the technique down but for now, jewelry only.

Would this question be better asked in the Jewelers bench forum?

I absolutely love my gravermax - and GRS are always a pleasure to deal with!

Well, after long hours reading and researching what I want, I think I've made up m mind about getting a Lindsay Air Graver with Palm Control.

It runs straight from the compressor and doesn't need the auxiliary benchtop unit like the GraverMax and similar designs. Which for me, is a huge plus because of space considerations. It's also less expensive for just the tool so the extra budget money can be used for accessories like a better sharpening system and different profiled gravers and extras for the vise.

This is going to be fun.

If you are sticking to jewellery I would go for the old fashioned hand gravers first, you will learn a lot more, quicker, and better than a pneumatic. The cost is so low as to be negligible and once you have the hang of things the switch to the pneumatic will be easier. For firearms the pneumatic is almost essential, gun engravers who prefer hand gravers use a hammer to drive the graver, steel being so much tougher than gold and silver.
