My take on eBay. I've bought and sold gemstones on eBay. In the UK there aren't that many true gem sellers on there. You have to be careful.
My rules;
1. Get to know what the seller is about if you can. What they've sold. Returns policy etc. 2. Only bid what you can afford to lose. (auctions and buy it nows are different) 3. "Buy it Now" offers additional consumer protection, sometimes with instant refunds. 4. Ignore any paperwork offered unless you can double check it. 5. Always select the tracked or insured shipping option.
There are a few bargains on there, last year I bought some coloured YAG's listed as CZ's and glass by someone clearing out a house. There are also things that are difficult to get from a traditional merchant from time to time. Broken stones are quite handy for practicing your testing techniques. Rough and crystals are fine for novices.
Expect to get burnt and smile when you don't. Very pessimistic I know, but it keep me safe.
