One of Dr. Hanneman's most useful inventions is an ingenious device to directly read Specific Gravity. When John Le Bourgeois and I spent an afternoon with him last year I promised to post instructions to make this tool on our forum.
There are also some links for the "not so handy" to order the balance directly. Please read this pdf and feel free to discuss. Click on the link below for full instructional article. Construction of a Hanneman Specific Gravity Balance

Hold on for just a minute.
That article was written 50 years ago.
Next month, at Tucson, I will be introducing a new approach to density. It is based on relative density, which is simpler, faster, and anyone can make themselves in a few minutes.
Keep you eyes open. I just have to write the instrutions and I have only 10 days.

I think that Dr Hanneman's idea of reconfiguring a Westphal's balance into a direct reading version was a masterstroke. Whilst using a gallows on an electronic balance is likely to be at least as accurate and makes a much neater instrument, albeit not direct reading, Dr Hanneman's version has one overriding advantage, particularly in the field, namely it is not dependent on an external powersource. When one is out in the field and a spare battery a 5 hour drive away, this has to be the decider.
