Hi guys,

I would like to know the steps on what to do when you find a rough gem? Who to go to(what type of people to contact) and the steps to get it from step 1 to getting it sold? Also, could I send the rough gem as a necklace and give it to someone over seas as a gift?

Thanks,
Melaysia

Send it labeled as a mineral specimen.

1) First step is identification.
2) Next step is trying to figure out an approximate worth.
3) After that, if it is worth anything, the next step is to *go back where you found it and find some more*.

4) Next you have to decide what you want to do with it. There are LOTS of possibilities. If it is amethyst, it isn't likely worth much, but you can still get it cut and make some nice jewelry. It means more when you found it yourself.

If it is a high quality tourmaline or ruby or sapphire, go back where you found it and find every bit you can. :-D

If it was at a "pay for dirt you look for place", then ignore step 3. Step 2 can likely be ignored, too.

Find a local club gem & mineral club, join, and ask for info.

Join mindat.org and post a photo for ID and even appraisal.

Do your research, online and with books... teach yourself.

Don't get too excited, don't think you're going to get rich, but have fun.

Pursue knowledge, not money.

Bear in mind that there are more red garnets out there than pigeon-blood $50k rubies.

More details from you = more info from us.

Where did you find it, size, color, photo? Why would you want to send it overseas as a necklace?
