Hi, I am new to this site and I'm enrolling in the Graduate Gemologist course in the near future to start my career in Gemology. My question is, is there anything worth learning before the course starts to get a head start and if so what subjects would you recommend. I have bought lots of books and recently found this site which provides a wealth of information but would like to know which subjects within the Graduate Gemologist course people struggle with so I can hopefully prepare myself. Thanks in advance.

Hi Alex123 and welcome. The GIA does an excellent job of presenting information in a very understandable way. If you are confused by a concept, they are always available to help you sort it out.
We have a free gemology course or 2 available on the left side of this page, along with several excellent informative links. You can get your feet wet a little.....but I wouldn't recommend jumping in over your head and splashing about too much. Sometimes it is best to start with a clean slate and no preconceived misiunderstandings.
Best of luck. And, we're always here if you need us.

Hello Dan&sally, I'm hopefully going to apply to study on campus (Carlsbad) as soon as the next years course dates are out. I'm currently trying to get my head in a few books and learn what I can beforehand to make sure everything goes well. Exciting times ahead for me!

I've taken the GG course on line. Very nice way to do it since I work 10-12hr days and help run 2 businesses with my sons. I started fall of 2015 and just enrolled in my last class for gem ID. Course work takes me 3 hours a night and I finish well ahead of the program..
