This is the opening message from the CSI forum
Quote:
A gem can not be identified by looking at a picture.
If all you can provide is a photo of an unknown gem, don't expect a positive identification.

Identification requires additional information, like refractive index, specific gravity, microscopic observations, physical characteristics like fracture/cleavage descriptions, etc.

If it is impossible for you to obtain any of this information, you are advised to bring your unknown to a professional who can decide which tests are necessary for identification.

We are happy to provide recommendations to help you find a professional.

And, now a word for established members:
A request for help in identification is NOT a game.
You DO NOT have to make a guess about what you think the specimen is.

If you are going to post an answer, please give a full explanation as to why you have come to that conclusion and decided to post it as a possibility.
Thanks.

Ok if you could help me in finding an expert to do these tests that would be great.

Hi Danny would you mind posting a picture of the item?
I'm the curious type and would like to see it.
Barbra can post the pic for you if you don't have enough posts.

Have a good one, Jim

Barbra, I suspect you're spot on but would also consider nephrite jade or bowenite.

OP, can the item be scratched with a paper clip?

Couldn't find a paper clip only a sewing needle and was unable to scratch it. Hope that helps.

Describe the feel of the carving. Is it waxy?

It feels very smooth and is cold to the touch. I don't think it feels waxy. Also seems quite heave for its size.

If you pressed hard with a needle, the absence of a scratch would indicate nephrite jade or bowenite.

Time for a specific gravity test.

From the look of it, bowenite, but S.G. would help. I'm in Manchester, U.K. and if you ever find yourself in the area, look me up and I'll run it on my machine.
