Hello,

I have inherited my fathers gem collection, he has opals, emeralds and rubies.
I would like to sell some of them and have found a couple of potential appraisers with an MGA. What would be any tips before going to the appraiser and what to expect between the price ranges for getting an appraisal, is there anyway to figure out the market value of some of the stones.

My father had a code of 2 or 3 letters that he would write to remind him of the prices of the stones. Is that a common practice among sellers?

I would like rough estimates for the following (I might be able to crack the pricing code):

1. Fine star ruby 1.75 ct
2. Very fine Burma Ruby Oval 1.32 ct
3.Very fine ruby (cust 5.4X5.2) 0.86 ct
4. Black Oval Opals 9.40 ct
5. Oval Ruby 6.2X5.7 mm 1.11 ct
6. Opals 2 1/8 X 3 1/2 mm 8.22 ct
7. Fine Burma Oval Ruby 4.7 X 4 mm 0.62 ct
8.Marq Rubies 5.5 X 6.5 5.35 ct
9. Fine RD Rubies 2.5 X 3 mm 6.62 ct
10.fine rd col emeralds 3.3X 4.4 mm 1.76 ct

The above is transpose to what it says in its packet (I assum col is for colombia and rd is for red)

Thank you for your help.

Additional question what could P/S stand for as in "P/S OPALS" , "P/S RUBY".

Thank you

I'm afraid there's no way to give an appraisal over the internet, even if we had some good pictures (not to mention the need to define a market, etc etc etc). At best you might get a rough estimate but most experts don't like doing that because there's just not enough information to give a good number, and it would be too easy to be way too high or way too low.

That said, a few photos would give us a basic idea of whether it's worth your time or not. I know most of us have seen low quality stones packaged with these kinds of labels (occasionally having been bandied as 'investment stones' at one point). So if there's something that obvious we might be able to help. And if they're nice we'll at least enjoy seeing the pictures.

My guess is that ps is pear shaped opals. Rd col emeralds would mean round. Emeralds are green. You need the appraiser to look at them. As previously stated, going to be next to impossible to do online. Good luck.

Wholesaler like to offer / sell gemstones with so-called price codes or put incognito prices on the label/box and their special clients know the code.
The code can stand for price by price or lot price by carat.
However, since almost every supplier uses a different code, you can not simply draw conclusions.

For example code JUWELCHAIN
1=J
2=U
3=W
4=E
5=L
6=C
7=H
8=A
9=I
0=N

So a price could be written JUW $ (123 USD) or CHIN (67.90 USD).

You can also take 1234567890 = DAMBURITEN or 01234567890 = GOLDSAPHIR other codes (words in which only a certain letter may occur).
As you see, you can chance the code 1234567890 to 0123456789 ....

Instead of USD the price can also be EUR or INR = Indian Rupee or THB = Thai Bath ....

Only the price code says nothing about the currency.

My guess is also P/S = pearshape and rd = roundcut
Colemerald moreover is a company with offices in Germany, Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Beijing ....

Photos would have been interesting. :wink:

Also, what one can realize from the sale of their gems is a function of how they go about selling them.

There is no Blue Book on gems. It's not like selling a car or real estate.

You will be offered what it is worth to the buyer which may or may not be reasonable.

As Stephen said, post some pictures!

Here are some of the pictures some of the labels for rubies contained opals instead:

Sorry for the quality of some of the pictures.

I would hope these are high grade stones as my father worked as a seller for 40 years.

Thank you for your comments I really appreciate it.

Is there be a good book for a crash course on emeralds rubies and opals valuation.

Thank you once again.

I've taken the liberty of organizing the above post a little.
Roberto49 describes the stones as follows
1. Fine star ruby 1.75 ct
2. Very fine Burma Ruby Oval 1.32 ct
3.Very fine ruby (cust 5.4X5.2) 0.86 ct
4. Black Oval Opals 9.40 ct
5. Oval Ruby 6.2X5.7 mm 1.11 ct
6. Opals 2 1/8 X 3 1/2 mm 8.22 ct
7. Fine Burma Oval Ruby 4.7 X 4 mm 0.62 ct
8.Marq Rubies 5.5 X 6.5 5.35 ct
9. Fine RD Rubies 2.5 X 3 mm 6.62 ct
10.fine rd col emeralds 3.3X 4.4 mm 1.76 ct

The only value I'm seeing here is with the small rubies and the small emeralds.
Perhaps $50-$100/ carat on the rubies
Perhaps $50-75/carat on the emeralds

Anyone else can feel free to weigh in.
