Hello,
I buy gold and silver in the DFW area and come across many types of gemstones set in gold, platinum, etc..
I hope I am not out of line by asking questions regarding my findings....and hope to use this thread/blog to gain knowledge and information on an ongoing basis on the various natural stones I find. I'm not looking for dollar values (unless that is not out of bounds then I will certainly welcome that information), but simply hoping that the expertise of the participants will be able to educate me on the type of stones I publish. Thanks so much!

This being said, I have a ring with a purple stone set in 14k gold. It is approx. 15mm across and approx 8mm deep. Not sure if this is an amethyst or some type of topaz? I would love any information you have on determining the difference in the two, along with any information you could pass along on this particular stone. Thank you.

It certainly isn't topaz. Although topaz does come in purple - it isn't *that* purple.

Thanks for your reply. Could it be an amethyst? The only thing I have to test stones is a diamond tester. If it's a CZ, the tester will not move. I like checking other stones with this device because if its a natural stone the sensor will slowly climb the ladder....where as a diamond will run quickly up the scale and beep. When I test this stone it actually moves rather quickly up the ladder....just not exactly sure what it is.

incredibly hard to tell from a picture. Basically I would guess:(and it is ONLY a guess)
1) CZ (yes, I have seen CZ exactly this color.) If CZ, it will sparkle a lot more than amethyst, and probably have a lot of different color flashes
2) Amethyst (Is there any evidence of color banding?)
3) Glass (Hold it to your lip - is it cold or warm? if warm, it is glass)

But ... you can always by Hanneman's book (on the left panel - Identifying Gems w/o Instruments) and try his methods. Or you can have someone that knows how to id stones look at it.

Thanks for the info. I will test the temperature and may just drop by a local jeweler.

Also there is a possibility that it may be vanadium doped synthetic sapphire.
Take it outside and shoot another picture...see if the color shifts to a more bluish tone.
