I'm still studying, I think it's just glass, I see no birefringence, but it appears to be double refractive. I'm guessing it's just glass. I've been buying some cheaper jewelry and taking it apart to try to learn this fun trade. I have some zircons and some red stones that are coming up in the ruby and red beryl range, I've been concentrating on those more since I've learned about birefringence. Now I'm trying to determine if they are natural or synthetic. I do the breath test and sometimes the fog evaporates immediately, sometimes it takes a few seconds. I need to enroll in some sort of schooling for this.....

They all feel pretty cold to me. I've been to an appraiser once for a stone that turned out to be a colorless zircon. I'm trying to get as much info as possible before I go back, but it might be worth it for the rubies.
