First let me say welcome.

As to tools, a lot depends on what you are trying to do.

The interests range so much that it is hard to say.

If you want to ID your materials, I would recommend 2 books for you. The first is Identifying Gems w/o instruments by Hanneman.

There is an extract on the left side bar.

In it he lists the second book, which I forget right now, but it has the physical properties of the gems.

The other recommendation i to read the links on the left, it provides a good starting point.

Again without a little better idea of what you are trying to do, it is hard to make a recommendation.
