Hi, my buddy was panning the McFee Creek in North West Michigan. He told me he found magnetic garnets that would stick to a magnet. I said impossible. He showed up yesterday and pulled these little gemstones out of his gold. We cleaned them, 1mm in size or less. I put my magnet to them and they stuck. I then took them to do a white paper test, I could see refraction coming from them. Under intense light they show colors of orange to pink, florescent they are dark red. What other tests can I do, no red under the Chelsea filter either, because he pulled out red corundum too and that showed up clearly. He said these little stones were heavy like magnetite and gold.
Just a curious mind.
Scott

Pyrope-almandine garnets won't fluoresce, but if you're using near-UV LEDs it's not hard to get a false positive for subtle fluorescence. Just the other day a jeweler was telling me about using neodymium magnets to collect garnets from a creek.
