Got this opal pendant a while ago. Is this a white opal or a crystal opal? The "parts" of precious opal in it are rather darker then the entire "whitish" background. I think it weighs 1.8 carats and is about 15 mm long and 8 mm wide. Also, what do you think is the value of this piece?

From the picture I would call it white base opal. From the picture and measurements you provided, I would guess that you are lite on your weight estimation. 2.5 to 3 carats seem closer to me.

The stone doesn't seem to fit the setting at all. A later addition ? This detracts still more from the value of the piece IMO. Provided that it has a value at all.

The value would be determined by finding comps for similar opals and defining the market you are using for the comps. This is something you can certainly do yourself.
