Hi everyone —

A ring was passed down to me by a family member and I was wondering if you could help me identify the stone? It is set in a 14k gold band and is branded as such, but that's all the information I have about it. I'm guessing it's not a precious gem because it looks slightly scratched?

Thanks so much for your help! :)

Depends how old and hard-worn it was. Even a diamond can abrade over time. Glass will look like that much quicker but sapphires will end up like that or worse given enough time. Unfortunately we can't identify a stone from a picture--you'll need more data to get it nailed down, which may or may not be difficult with it in the setting. A raman spectrometer would be the ideal solution here but it's harder to find someone local who has one handy.

Polariscope, refractive index and magnification should narrow it down...
Raman would be a slam dunk.
