I agree with 1bwana1. On closer inspection the carved flower does appear to be ivory.
No, you shouldn't sell it.
Not only because there are international restrictions on ivory sales but because it is (IMO) rather reprehensible to deal in dead animal parts.

Semi-precious is a term which is not often used anymore.

Try testing the waters.
The first strand on your list is tigereye. Research what tigereye strands are selling for on the sites you wish to feature them. Draft a description which sets YOUR beads apart from the others.

Vintage mid-century, custom designed strand, incorporating unique bronze timeless accents, perfectly enhancing the warm golden sheen of the round and carved beads, blah blah blah

Oh of course re: the ivory. I can probably just remove it from the strand and sell the strand.

Oh, OK, I didn't realize semi-precious was an obsolete term.

Yes, I do plan to provide glowing descriptions.

So you would characterize these as vintage mid-century?

They are so high quality, *heavy* and beautiful I am sure, even without being specific about the stones, that I can do well with them.

Thanks for your help - it's been invaluable!

Having now looked at the entire collection of images I will say this.

Many of the stones could be identified with reasonable confidence from the images. However, it would take some time and effort that I can't imagine many would be prepared to do for free.

I will also say that the value of the the pieces will in most cases have nothing to do with the the ID of the stones. These pieces will be sold on whether the buyer finds them attractive, not the material.

Some of the ethnic pieces may have value based on age, or collectability if they can be proven to be authentic. But here is not the place to find this kind of information.

So you are left with two choices.

1.) put a price on them based on how attractive you think they are, and see if you can find a buyer that agrees with you.

2.) Invest the time and money to take them to knowledgeable person to ID the stones, evaluate the pieces on artistic or historical charactoristics, and value them.

What you can accomplish here going forward is minimal.

There is a kind of ivory that is legal to sell - Mammoth ivory. However it is difficult to sell because so many people have tried to pass off Elephant ivory as mammoth ivory. The pattern of layers is distinct, but you have to have it in hand to tell the difference, and because of the historic problems you can't sell any type of ivory on a lot of venues (e.g ebay) and you can get advertisement bans from some companies if they (incorrectly) believe you may be selling elephant ivory.

Don't forget my suggestion for a local gem and rock club:
Here is a list

Thanks to everyone for all of the advice.

I agree with your assessment, that I either have to sell the necklaces on the merits of their beauty, or, invest the time/effort into more research. Nothing here has lead me to believe that I have anything that from the stone perspective is of huge value, so I am leaning towards giving it a go based on the design and uniqueness of the pieces.

I will, though, reach out to our local Pittsburgh gem society as I found one on that list!

Thank you all again - I truly appreciate you taking the time to lend your expertise!

One final note. I would be willing to bet that someone at the Pittsburgh club will help you ID every strand of beads.
I am a member of the San Francisco Gem & Mineral Society and I'm always willing to help out.
