It is with great sadness I'd like to announce Dr. Hanneman passed away on December 12, 2020. His legacy will live on forever!

I may know who, was he local to you or local to the GIA in Carlsbad? If you don't mind me asking.

I use a pistol cleaning kit. I'd be reluctant to use sandpaper, but I've used gun solvent followed by oil.

Al, as stated completely. One would hope that cleaning is not re-surfacing.

Yes, one would hope so. And I would make sure by not using an abrasive. It's not just a matter of keeping it round - if any material is removed, the dop will shift

I am also gainst abrasives inside the quill. I just clean really well with alcohol, or acetone.

I am very fussy about cleaning dops really well before inserting into the quill. If the quill gets dirty, just that dirt will tend to abraid over time and you can lose tolerances from just that. I don't use oil or other lubes because dirt tends to stick to it.

I agree, but unfortunately the aluminum on the inside of these MDR quills after sitting with moisture, can buildup with heavy calcification, remember I am talking talking about 25-30+ year old MDR machines. If it is been well maintained one would hope, its moot. And if it already has calcified, corroded to a degree, each time the dop is inserted it is feasible it may be shifting in any case. These machines were not the most accurate machines from the start.

Didn't know these quills are aluminum. Not the best for longevity :-)
I agree about the importance of cleanliness. I clean dops with alcohol and a Kimwipe before inserting them.
