We have received many emails and PM's from new members who are a little intimidated by our forum. Some of them will only ask their questions via PM's or emails as they are afraid to post on the forum.

No question is too small or basic for us to make an attempt to clarify.

If a topic is just too broad to be appropriately answered on the forum, we will offer helpful links to explain concepts that may require outside study.

Please be aware that our forum is NOT intended to cater to "consumers and related issues"; It is intended for industry professionals and those who wish to learn more about gemological principles. DO NOT post pictures of gems hoping for an identification. If such a post does not contain additional optical information, it will be deleted.

Funny how those 'simple' questions turn out darn hard at times! 8) At the very least long!

No one should be afraid to ask a question here ... I've already asked all the "stupid" ones a body could think up :P . Although, come to think of it ... I'll probably come up with a few more before long :D .

I am not a gemologist, a cutter, an appraiser or a student of any of these. I love gemstones, however, and I want to know more about them. I find that the more I know, the more I enjoy them.

I was a long time lurker. I asked myself what could I reasonably contribute to such masters as can be found here? The fact is those masters are amazing, accessible people who truly wish to help.

I know I have asked my share of basic (ok, some downright silly) questions and that I have said some things that make my lack of knowledge clear. At all times, I have only received kind, constructive answers, good orientation and advice. I have seen seemingly simple yes-or-no questions reveal great depth when discussed from different points of views (cutter, appraiser, retailer, gem lovers).

Soon after I joined, a member told me, by PM, that GemologyOnline is a lot more fun when you are an active part of it. He was very right.

Never underestimate the ingenuity of people. As they say, make something idiot-proof and they'll build a better idiot. ;)

Indeed, no one should be intimidated to ask questions.
In addition, this is the beginners only forum.

Here is an old French quote :
"The only stupid question is the one you don't ask".
Meaning that curiosity should be encouraged and one should ask questions.

Also keep in mind a lot of regulars answer questions and comment in a familiar sense intended for regulars on here they already know. So when things might get intense (oh yea, baby!) it's not meant to dissuade new members/readers.

I like that even better than, "You can make it fool proof, but you can't make it damfool proof."

Does 'consumers and consumer related issues' mean that we can't discuss visual appearance or pieces for jewelry?

I'm not really clear on what that means.

It means that this board is intended for industry professionals and students of Gemology.

Hi Barbra,

I'm sorry but I still don't understand. I'm not an industry professional but a hobbyist gem collector and learner. I'd like to learn everything I can about gems and discuss them. Is this not a forum for me?

May I post pictures of some of my rock
collection?
This will help educate me & maybe others.
I understand that this will in no way give me a
positive ID on my stones.
It may give me a better idea of what I have.
I don't have the brains to be a gemoligest
but I am going to try my hands in accessory making in due time.
Also thanks for being real people!
