As I was reading my IDEX Newsletter which arrived this morning I was intriqued by this article. A jeweler in New Zealand has come up with a way to mount diamonds without any metal being seen in a face-up direction. The support comes from below the girdle.

Nice article.
Made me wonder about a few things though.
Micro-groove and the visibility of it through the crown. How this will effect grading of diamonds, maybe the same as girdle laser inscriptions.
Any thoughts?

First thing that came to mind is the micro-grooving they do below the girdle on princess cuts for invisible settings...

Hi there,
this is nothing new in my opinion. Van Cleef is doing something like this since around 100 years with its mystery settings.
Mostly not for single stones.

I don't find the diamond solitaire interesting either.

This style of setting was pioneered and perfected by Van Cleef & Arpels before they patented it in 1933.
