Hi all,
hope this is the place to post this. MY brother is looking at getting engaged. he has asked me to cut some stone for him, which i have agreed to do, but he has yet to find a ring blank and i dont want to start cutting until he does.

Does anyone know of a reliable jeweller or some other place where he can go to find a ring blank somewhere around the gold cost or Brisbane in Australia?

Are there any places we should avoid?

Might be willing to consider mail order if anyone knows of a reliable dealer interstate or overseas.

thanks

What size? Size of stone? Cab or faceted? Sterling silver or ?? Style?

Ozy, apart from going custom and you make the stone whatever size you want, your brother might be better off looking off shore.
I'll keep looking here but the ones I've found so far are pretty manky looking.

When you're looking, search for semi mounts. These have the accent diamonds already set if he wants those as well. Unless you can set, you might still need a jeweller to set it for you. The prongs don't seem to be notched as a rule on these ones.

sorry about he delaying in getting back to you. We just had our second baby. A beautiful little baby girl weighing exactly 15000 ct. As you might understand it's been a bit hectic around here.

Just for a bit more information. He is looking at having three faceted stones. A topaz about 5-6mm with two sapphires about 3-4 mm one either side of the Topaz. I am cutting the stones for him so they can be whatever size he desires.

Thanks mehoose for the semi mounts tip. He's not looking for diamonds to be set into the ring but it's useful information to file away for the future.

There seems to be no shortage of people willing to set stones for us.

Still leaves us with the original problem - the blank.

when we eventually get everything sorted out and finished I will post a picture of the finished product.

thanks for the responses.

I haven't had any spare gems since I met minty (my partner). She will usually wander down into my workshop and browse through my latest creations and idly sit them on top of her finger and make comments like that would look nice in a ring. She has half a box of stones reserved just fore her...

Bub is fine and mum is well too. They are both back from the hospital now. They like to move them out within 48 hours now. My youngest is 19 months old now. I forgot how small they are when they are first born.

We called her Isabelle Grace. Isabelle because it was the only name we could agree on (good thing we didnt have a boy :D ) and Grace after Minty's maternal grandmother.

Stuller has a huge selection of mounts at jeweler's wholesale prices, but they still cost well over the gold cost. If you don't want to pay for the fabrication you'd be best off searching pawn shops, estate jewelry, etc. I don't know anywhere you can get settings without a pretty decent markup, even sheet and wire are significantly over.
