Apparently it can be a bit of an issue when you find a ring you like but it is not your size. Likely it could be re sized, but there is time, effort, and can't be done right away. Could I get some info on flexible shanks? I looked but I don't even know what to call them. I'd like to find something that could be used with a narrow shank, and could be added on while the ring is being made. Or maybe just the official name and then I can google prices and whatnot. Thanks

Nothing will beat a proper sizing, shanks take a lot of abuse and even the best mechanical ones wear out and break.
To my knowledge a "horseshoe" or ring guard would be the only solution here to adjust between sizes. They make a ring guard that spring up and down and are the simplest, temp solution (yes they look terrible if you ask me).
If you come up with a good solution you should patent and market it.
Here are the springy types of ring guards. They are very inexpensive (this person put a generous mark on theirs), easy to install, and come in different mm widths.
