A recent thread regarding 3d diamond scanning sparked a question I have been pondering for a while, but didn't have the right audience.
The diamond article
Introduced me to the Octanus, and Sarin Galxy Scanner.
The question I have, is what is the best way to 3d scan a piece of rough transparent mineral, cabochon, freeform carving, or cut gemstone?
I have pondered the question before, but never asked anyone since I wasn't a member of any gemological forums.
There will be no need for inclusion mapping, or any of the advanced features of the Sarin Galaxy.
Simply outer solid profile, mesh, or whatever 3d format.
1. Is there a way to do this with cheaper 3d scanners, using a removable coating such as a dip or paintlike coating in order to make it opaque and transmit the scan better? 2. Is it necessary? 3. Are there any specialized holding fixtures? 4. Are there any specialized angles of scanning?
The purpose would just be to 3d scan a freeform cab or gem, and be able to -design irregular custom settings as to the irregular shape. -design around awkward stones/pearls/etc.....
5. Would there be any color interactions with stones in regards to scanning? Perhaps any permanent changes, temporary stone color changes, stone treatments susceptible to damage?
Sure there are digitizer scribes, but I would have to assume that for the purposes mentioned above, they would hardly be as accurate.
Anywho, just to scan a basic solid piece of gem material, jet carving, opal carving etc.....
Anyone with experience?
Anyone tried it?
Any tips?
Specific scanner information, types of 3d scanners which would/would not work, etc????????
