As I mentioned on another thread I'm working on a jewelry commission to make an Art Deco-style pendant featuring 5.43 ct. Sri Lankan sapphire (bottom image).

I thought the stone might face well if mounted east-west style in the pendant. That, plus the shape of the stone, started me thinking "Art Deco!" I mentioned that to the client and she said excitedly: "Yes, with diamond baguettes." So I did some research and found a design idea "kicker" (center image).

The top image is my back-of-the-envelope concept for the pendant, which will hang both east-west and north-south, depending on the client's mood. If I can stretch the budget the piece will be made of platinum, a la Cartier. If not it will be 18K white gold.

It will feature rows of matching round sapphires at each end of the stone with diamond accents at each corner and in the corners of the pendant setting. The center stone will be surrounded by channel-set diamond baguettes. The diamond sizes and treatment at the ends of the piece are still undecided, and budget restrictions may change the overall design as I go. At this point I see them featuring one or two round stones against a polished gold surface or maybe one diamond at each end surrounded with diamond pave. I'll have to decide which is more in keeping with the Art Deco motif.

I hope to have a CAD rendering next week sometime which I'll post here if it's in the design "ballpark." This is lots of fun!

I meant to present these images sequentially but so far I haven't figured out how to make that happen.

This job has “evolved” a little since my last post. The CAD required more time and thought than I originally predicted. This is the latest – but perhaps not final – version.

I still have concerns about how the center stone will be set and hope to solve that problem in the next few days. Hopefully I’ll soon have some side views of the piece soon that will show that plus how the design will accommodate either north-south or east-west wear, as the owner wishes on any particular occasion. As of now at least, the square and rectangular spaces will hold baguette diamonds if I can find the right-sized cuts that will channel set with level tables. The diagonals at the ends will display sapphire rounds that match the center stone.

Some other design elements remain temporarily up in the air but in general the piece is coming along as I originally envisioned it. I’ll report more as the project develops.

Thanks Barbra, since you're the only person who's shown the least interest in this thread

This commission and another, a ring featuring a very nice emerald, are close to completion. The pendant has "evolved" more along the guidelines suggested by the client. This is not just a creative fancy on my part. I don't know about others in this business but I feel my job is to make the client happy and fulfill her vision. My client wants an heirloom piece suggestive of art deco.

These are the latest renderings of the pendant. It will be made of 18K white gold. The sapphire will be bezel-set with a surround of baguette diamonds. The diagonal corners will feature round blue sapphires to match the center. The fan-shaped areas at the ends will be encrusted with micro-pave-set round diamonds.

The chain will be attached by clips which will allow both north-south and east-west wear as the client desires. I hope to be able to post images of the finished piece in a week or two.

Image uploads on this site always seem to be in reverse order of the way they were uploaded. Anyhow the "first" image shows the back of the piece.

you realize you're getting old when, glancing at that sketch you start thinking about the amount of soldering joint needed..................and then, few milliseconds after you realize there will be almost none of them in a piece made in that way...  ................the only consolation is NO casted piece will show the internally high-grade polishing of a manufactured one 8) ...........nice design, though..........

ciao

Thanks for your comments Alberto. You're correct but magnetic tumblers with tiny stainless steel burnishers help a lot in that regard. I'm glad you like the design.
