I'm imagining that the size of these pearls is a factor. How big are these pearls? Wilson?

Given that the silk thread will be of the 0.40/0.45 mm thickness, the size of the pearl will be a secondary consideration, the hole will have to be 0.50 mm to get the thread througth.

.....drilling from 2 different directions seems unwarranted with small pearls. Although, I've never drilled a pearl.
