Very nice job!

I'm envious--my smithing skills still need a LOT of work...

Oh dear, Danielle,*that* page! It's at least a dozen years old and still up there to testify against me. To re-do that, properly, has been on my to-do list since longer than I wish to say and will likely remain there for a while yet.

Meanwhile here are two more recent commission pieces. Both are wedding rings. The first is Bay of Fundy agate, this time not from Nova Scotia but from the island of Grand Manaan which sits in the Bay between New Brunswick and Maine, and part of which is composed of the same basalt lava flow which furnishes the Nova Scotia agates. For sentimental reasons it absolutely had to be Grand Manaan stone. I had exactly one single chunk of Grand Manaan agate to work with, collected 20-odd years ago. It was a nice sound dense chunk, grey-ish, and not real dramatic in patterning, but took a fine polish. So here's what I did with it - the spacers are 14K gold, the rest sterling.

I put that picture up on my facebook - with the outcome that just a few days later I got a call from someone who had wanted a wedding ring made with wood and had been wondering how that might be done, saw the Grand Manaan ring and said "that's it."

Apparently this particular wood is the hardest there is, "iron heart" or something like that. Most of the piece the client gave me was deep jet black except for a small area of tan colour - which he wanted included as far as possible. So anyway to cut the long story short, here's the outcome of that. Again the body is sterling silver, the spacers gold.

The first wedding ring with Bay of Fundy Agate is awesome :)

This engagement band in mokume was quite a challenge to assemble. The bulk of the patterning in mokume is in the outside .3mm or so and so one needs to preserve the outside surface with as little sanding as possible. This particular ring was fabricated using a hydraulic press and several different types of hammers and punches as well as the typical jewelry tools. Way more time consuming than it looks!

Michael,

That is absolutely beautiful. Love the play of metal leading to the pinnacle of the stone.

OMG, that ring is one of the finest examples of design incorporating mokume I have ever seen.

Hi !

I totally agree with Barbra: This ring is beautiful, original, the metal movements surround gently and harmoniously the stone ... I'd like to be in the place of the bride!
Congrats , Michael =D>

* I also admire the perfect finish

A few of my brother's latest pieces. He has an interesting eye for color. Settings are obviously just Tripps interlocking pieces but there you have it.
Image
Two tourmalines (nice color but a few inclusions on the pink one, green is a bit dark but nice) sandwiching a smoked black Welo opal. It's got a lot of red and green fire so it ties the tourmalines together nicely.

A light green emerald and Welo opal combo.
